I'll Be In My Room - Statement

I’ll Be In My Room is a video project started in 2019, just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit my part of the world. Originally the project was meant to reflect on the feeling of being alone with our thoughts in our rooms, our sense of identity and the discomfort that comes with growing up and figuring out who you are. These ideas took on new forms as we moved into a new normal, where isolation became a very real part of all of our lives.

I’m fascinated with the everyday. I’ve always been interested in the idea of common household objects in unusual places. I think that bringing the inside, outside offers an altered perspective.

When I was developing the original concept for the video, I was really inexperienced in the technicalities of filmmaking. Over the course of shooting I had started NBCCD’s Photography program, moved away, met new friends and built new skills, all while the world was being turned upside down. I worried about what this would mean for the project, and had to take several long breaks from shooting. The biggest thing this project taught me was how meaning changes and evolves over time, and in turn has the ability to become something else entirely.

Filmed in Saint John and Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
